We see loss and violence in the news every day, and it can push me to despair. But upheaval is also an opportunity for transformation. There are so many examples of courageous women—known and unknown—who are leading the struggle for the Earth, climate action and social justice across the globe. So many of us are forging ahead for the future we want to see. There’s heartbreak and suffering, and there’s hope and love. Reflecting on what we’ve co-created with women leaders over the past two years has brought us joy and energy to continue the work. You may be surprised to hear that less than 1% of international philanthropy goes to women-led environmental initiatives. With your support, we are changing that number. Because of you, we have partnered on more than 20 on-the-ground projects with 29 nonprofit organizations in Africa, the Andes-Amazon, and the U.S. Desert Southwest. While each project is distinct, they share important threads. All work toward increased women’s leadership and gender equity; improved forest, water and biodiversity health; and reduced carbon emissions. I often think of the words of Aileen Maypa, a biologist who spent years restoring reefs in the Philippines and who documented how women’s involvement improved outcomes. Maypa said that “women are looking at the future.” When the problems of today seem intractable, Maypa’s words invite us all to keep an eye toward the future and let our dreams direct the actions we take today. Personally, I am choosing to co-create the workplace and the partnerships that I want to see in the world. I can’t think of a better time for Planet Women to be working at the intersections of the environment, gender equity, social justice and sustainable development. I am proud to be growing an organization focused on empowering diverse, women leaders. And everything we do—from how we A Message from Our CEO3 work as a team to how we collaborate on the ground—is rooted in our values: be inclusive; share power; act with and for many generations; and honor our wisdom. In this annual report, I’m proud to share how Planet Women is shaping a more effective and equitable environmental movement. Your commitment to Planet Women makes this work possible. Our wins are your wins. In 2022, with your support, Planet Women: •Granted over a half million dollars directly to partner organizations to grow women’s leadership, amplify Indigenous voices, and support field projects in the Amazon, Congo, and Colorado River Basins. •Launched the 100 Women Pathway and the Regenerative Leadership Project, two personal growth programs that collectively brought together more than 110 environmental practitioners building a new leadership paradigm. •Shared our platform and promoted cross-pollination and collective learning. We hosted seven events for 550 people and featured innovators, scientists and artists working in conservation, gender equity, and cultural transformation. As we keep moving forward, it’s imperative that we rest, support one another, and bring our unique talents and energies to creating a future that we all want to see. Together, we can “reel the dream closer to reality,” as Ayana says; and plant the seeds for a healthy planet that benefits all life. Kristine Zeigler Chief Executive Officer Planet Women From a foundation of science and community, we must imagine the future we want to live in, and the future we want to pass on, and every day do something to reel the dream closer to reality. We believe that by transforming the way we work and live, we can all heal ourselves, heal each other, and heal the planet. Planet Women offers two leadership programs designed to transform the culture of conservation: The Regenerative Leadership Project and the 100 Women Pathway. This year, both programs launched their inaugural cohorts and created powerful communities. Planet Women is building a stronger, more inclusive environmental movement by modeling a new kind of leadership.
